“One cannot judge a nation by how it treats its most illustrious citizens, but by the treatment it metes out to its most marginalized - its prisoners”. Nelson Mandela.
Torture and ill-treatment in Zimbabwe‟s police cells is rife. The government has taken no action to halt rising incidences of torture and ill-treatment of individuals and civil society activists while in the custody of the police or intelligence services.
The issue of ill treatment of people in the hands of the police can not go on unchallenged from the student body and representatives. it has come to our attention that one of our students the national university of science and technology Sydney Ndachengedzwa was tourtured and left for death in an an alledged case of theft at Homelink in Bulawayo. He was beaten by dogs after at the command of detectives Gumbo and Chuma from the bulawayo CID homicide and was left in comma for more than a day. He was latter dumped at the Hillside police station and latter taken to the hospital after being forced into admitting to say that he was beaten from by dogs when trying to flee from the police.Detective Chuma latter threatened our student after he had said all that had happened by saying that he was going to make him disappear “Ndokunyudza”. he also threatened that he was going to write a fabricated report to the National University of Science and technology that was going to impede our fellow student’s studies at the University.
What these detectives did to our student in inhuman and threats that they are giving give us questions that relate to the theft of the cash. if there are genuine detectives, why are they trying to suppress every information. As the Secretary for student Affairs and welfare an on behalf of the NUST student body, we want answers of why our dear student have been inhumanly treated. We are calling the responsible authorities to give is the reason why all this is being let go unquestioned. Can Mr Chihuri and the Ministry of Home affairs us answers. If answers are not given, we are going to call for a peacifull demonstration.
Our dear student is due for an operation on Monday.
